Three Algerian borders guards were killed in an ambush by members of an unknown group in Algeria’s northwestern province of Tlemcen, local El Watan newspaper reported Friday.
The newspaper went on to say the patrol was drawn into “clashes of great intensity” between the Algerian villages of Zouia and Roubane, close to the Moroccan border. This marks the second such attack in Algeria since the start of the month of Ramadan.
The border between the two countries has been closed since 1994 following an attack in the Moroccan town of Marraquexe which Morocco blames on Algerian intelligence services.
Algeria and Morocco have been at loggerheads over the Western Sahara area since Algeria backed the separatist Moroccan Polisario movement.
